Exam 2

Thursday, November 29

Examinations: Examinations will include material from lectures, labs, and readings. Exam 1 includes material from the first half of the course. Most of Exam 2 will cover new material, although I do reserve the right to apply principles learned in the first part of the quarter to the new material. Examinations will include short-answer, essay, matching, sketching, labeling, and multiple-choice questions.

Laboratories: Labs will be graded on participation and completion of exercises. Purchase yourself a hand lens--you will need it anyway as you continue your geological studies.

Project: A laboratory and/or field-based research project is required for successful completion of the course. A written report and oral/poster presentation of the project is due December 4th. You should choose a topic and have it approved by Thursday October 18th. The written report will include at least 5 pages of double-spaced, typewritten text excluding title page/abstract, standard bibliography, illustrations, tables and appendices. Group projects must be  at least 10 pages long.  A ten-minute, illustrated (show us what you did w/ slides, photos, overhead transparencies, or give us a demo of your research) oral presentation is required on December 4th.

Depositional Environment Portfolio: You must make a portfolio representing five different sedimentary environments.  For each environment you must explain the processes that operate there and the characteristics of the sediments/rocks that are produced by them.  You must document some of these characteristics with samples and/or photographs from the field.  You must make a connection between the modern environments and ancient sedimentary rocks.  Thus if you sample a modern eolian dune, you must compare your sample to ancient rocks that formed in that environment.  This may be done by including samples, photographs or illustrations of ancient eolian dune deposits.  If you sample an ancient alluvial deposit you must compare it to a modern analog.  Each environmental report must include a map, accurate locality information, field photograph and sketch of the outcrop, pertinent sketches of significant sedimentary structures, a photograph (either macro or photomicrograph) of the specimen and a one to two page, word-processed (10-12 point font) description and interpretation.  Be aware that some samples may require polishing, thin-sectioning, or other special preparation.
