Course Outline:

1. Read: A. Hallam, 1989.  Great Geological Controversies, 2nd Edition.  Oxford  University Press, New York, 244 pp.

  • Produce a  typewritten/word-processed  three-page minimum outline  for each of the 8 chapters.  Focus your reading on the overall developments of these major geological  concepts.   As you study, try to pick one of the  primary  authors/works that you would like to pursue for the second half of the course.

2. Pick one of the original works/volumes that helped define geological thought (e.g. Hutton’s Theory of the Earth,  one volume of  Lyell’s Principles of Geology , Wegner’s  The Origin of Continents and Oceans) and write a  ten-page minimum, typewritten/word-processed  critique comparing those concepts with what we currently understand/think about the topic.

Course Evaluation:

Based on critiques and primary paper.

Course may be repeated  through study of another “classical” work.
