Mission Statement

Geology is truly an interdisciplinary science, using aspects of chemistry, physics, mathematics, biology, and computer science, as well as incorporating philosophical and critical thinking skills to address geological problems. Because of the integrative nature of this discipline, our students become well-versed in a broad spectrum of scientific disciplines.

The Department of Geological Sciences has a mission to provide geology majors with a thorough grounding in the geological sciences, which may be used to pursue a meaningful career in the earth sciences or one of many related fields, such as environmental law, teaching or government services. This background will also prepare geology majors for advanced studies in the geological sciences or related disciplines. The department also has a mission to educate non-majors to make informed decisions on matters pertaining to interactions between geology and society. These missions are accomplished through a combination of teaching and faculty and student research.
